Violin Lessons & Teaching Philosophy

  • Method

Early Stages - I teach using Dr. Suzuki’s method in conjunction and heavily supplemented with hand-selected materials including music of the 21st century and music theory.

Advanced players will be given individualized programs based on the student’s goals and time commitment to violin lessons.

My complete method is organized into 10 levels of violin technique and repertoire. Repertoire in each level is supplemented by music theory, note reading, etudes and exercises aiming to develop a natural progression of technique alongside thoughtfully curated repertoire. At the completion of each level there is a culminating performance at either a studio recital or private recital. Studio recitals are organized once a semester.

  • Teaching Philosophy

PRIVATE LESSONS - Individualized learning focused on teaching the student how to develop the following skills:

Fluency - reading and interpreting music (pitch/rhythm/harmony)

Tone - the art of the Violin Bow and how to develop a beautiful sound from the first lesson

Listening - developing the “Ear” for musical recall (style/musical choices)

Routine - individualized planning for at-home practice throughout the week

Goals - learning new skills through continuous progression and regular practice

Community - performing and sharing our music with others
